My love of horses and the Old West began
over 50 years ago when I got my first
of many horses and spent Saturday afternoons
watching all the old western movie
heroes bringing law and order to the Old
West. My lifetime affair riding top
Western horses in national-rated competition
and the Pasadena Rose Parade led to
my collecting silver parade saddles over
the past 20 years.
Christie's, the world's leading auction
house, founded in 1766, conducts auctions
all over the world in 80 categories. I was
selected as an independent appraiser for
Christie's in 1997 due to my expertise in
the category of saddles and western
collectibles. I have a gracious letter from
the President of Christie's thanking me
for my help. With regard to silver saddles,
I love the thrill of chasing them and the
excitement of discovering them for our museum.
John Carney started doing leather work
for me over 15 years ago. The quality of
his work is clearly the best I have ever
seen. He obviously uses his head to make
wise decisions regarding what needs to be
done to restore a saddle and executes his
work with precision detail. You should visit
my website at
"pitmansaddlemuseum.com" to see
quality craftsmanship.
